Adelaide Crows, Matt Crouch, blacklisted, contract, career, trade, whispers, Bryce Gibbs, Matthew Nicks, dropped

Matt Crouch’s “messy” contract situation at Adelaide has taken another turn with the midfielder “blacklisted” – despite having another year to run on his contract.

Crouch was said to be “furious” this week when he was told he would not accept a new contract at the Crows.

The 2017 All-Australian and club best and fairest has been out of favor under coach Matthew Nicks and has been limited to just 11 games this season, playing just once after losing in Round 15.

SEN’s Andrew Hayes says Crook has been placed on the “restricted” list and will not represent the club in 2022.

Co-host Ken Korns said it was no easy feat for the Crows to cut ties with the 27-year-old.

He recalled the personal experience of “digging out” when he was told he was not wanted in Port Adelaide – even though he had years to run on his deal, his son’s medical needs came first.

“I don’t think Matt Crouch digs like that,” he said.

“(But) he holds some power here. If you don’t want to trade him, he shouldn’t be traded.”

Cornes reckoned another club would be willing to take a chance on Crouch, given his good form since falling to the SANFL.

“I guess there’s a club that’s going to hell with him at the prime of his life and if there’s another club,” he said.

“It’s a difficult situation.

“You can see the anger in him. I don’t think he has a good understanding of what’s going on as the other players running around midfield in Adelaide have not been injured.

“He was like, ‘Well, I tried to do that in my game. But they’re not watching. Everything I do, you’ve blacklisted[to use your phrase].’

“At the end of the year, I think there will be a club that will look at him.”

But Cornes warned Crows fans not to expect anything in return.

“If you’re a Ravens fan wondering what’s coming back, you’re not going to get anything. It will be like the 60’s or 70’s election, now they are happy to get him off the books.

He would never play in an AFL side again.

Cornes labeled Adelaide’s midfield “complete and chaotic” and said the club needed to go into the draft to build from the ground up.

Adelaide Footy journalist Michelangelo Rucci has warned that Crouch’s condition could quickly resemble Bryce Gibbs’ treatment at the end of his career.

“Adelaide has learned nothing if there is a repeat of that,” he warned on SEN.

“I thought in 2022, there are really respectful ways to treat people.

“If you have to tell a player it’s over, we’ll look at different options in the squad, I hope it’s better than the way they handled Brice Gibbs at Adelaide.”

Earlier this month, Knicks said he told Crouch he wanted him at the club in 2023.

“Matty is an important part of our team,” he said.

“We keep asking Matty to keep his head down and I think that’s passed down from our playing group – they know he’s doing what we’re asking.

“He’s done a fantastic job and come back to the SANFL and he’s done it so we’re going to ask him to continue to do that and then it’s going to be a choice, where is that place going to be?”
