Nine months after arriving in Collingwood as father and son gun and ready footballers, Nick Dykos has been crowned the 2022 AFL Rising Star.

Dykos won the top honor for the AFL’s best young player on Wednesday night, comfortably beating Geelong defender Sam de Kong and Hawthorn midfielder Jay Newcombe.

The 19-year-old received the top five votes from the 12 Rising Star judges to finish with 60 votes – the most ever in the Rising Star count, beating Sam Walsh’s 54 in 2019 – 12 ahead of De Kong.

Dykos, the son of Collingwood great Peter and brother of Magpies wingman Josh, defied expectations when he wore his father’s famous jumper 35 in 2022 to become the fourth player in the history of the Rising Star Award to receive the highest vote total. Panel after Jared Rivers (2004), Daniel Rich (2009) and Dan Hanbury (2010).

“It’s very humiliating for me…I’m a little speechless. I didn’t expect it myself,” Daikos said on stage.

“My main aim was to have a good season and get into the team as soon as possible and luckily it was round 1. We had a good win and luckily I was able to stay in that side.

“You still have doubts going into games – you never feel like you belong fully. I’m still working every day. We’ve created a good club philosophy to improve every day.

In the second half of the year, Daicos emerged as a red-hot favorite for the Rising Star crown after showing incredible consistency in a strong Collingwood side and showing maturity beyond his years ahead of Newcombe’s 25.

He has averaged 26 tackles this season and his best performance came in Round 18 against Adelaide with an eye-catching three goals and 40 disposals.

Daikos played all 22 games, averaging a club-high 26 and was a surprise addition to the 44-man Australian squad.

Many recruits believed Dykos was the best player in last year’s draft class, but North Melbourne made Jason Horne-Francis their No.1 priority and slipped to pick 4, while the Giants bid on Sam Darcy (Western Bulldogs) before taking Finn. Callaghan.

“He told me he was very proud,” Dykos said of his famous father.

“It means a lot to have him in the room … it’s all about him.”
