Arsenal def Crystal Palace, Premier League round one results, scores, video, news, Gabriel Martinelli

Mikel Arteta hailed his performance as Arsenal overcame a second-half attack from Crystal Palace in the Premier League to win 2-0 at Selhurst Park on Friday.

Gabriel Martinelli’s header gave Arteta’s men a half-time lead after a season-ending 3-0 defeat in April cost them Champions League qualification.

Mark Guhi’s late goal sealed all three points after Odense Edouard and Eberechi Eze missed big chances for Palace.

“Winning is the most important thing. It builds confidence to win the first game, then we can discuss the things we need to improve on,” Arteta said.

“You need to suffer to win here. We did and it’s part of the mindset we want to build on. Arsenal lost 2-0 at Brentford on the opening night of last season, their worst start to a league campaign in 67 years.

But they improved their form in pre-season and rewarded Arteta’s faith in him with a £100 million transfer fee.

The arrival of Gabriel Jesus to fill the need at centre-forward was Arsenal’s star signing of the summer and the Brazilian almost made his debut in style after four minutes.

Jesus got in the middle of the Palace defense and when his first effort was blocked, Martinelli had to do better than put the rebound on target.

The visitors were completely dominant in the opening quarter, but it took a set to make the breakthrough.

Another first was Oleksandr Zinchenko’s header from a corner that Martinelli had enough power to beat Vicente Guaita.

Palace have faced a more problematic pre-season with several key players absent from their tour of Australia due to their coronavirus vaccination status.

It took half an hour for the Eagles to find their footing, but they will be disappointed not to at least take a point after getting the game level.

Arsenal were guilty of causing their own problems by waking up the Palace fans as Aaron Ramsdale’s assurance was denied and thankfully the England goalkeeper was back to one of the defenders.

Ramsdale equalized before half-time and made a good stop to head Edwards, who the French striker fired inches over the bar for another attempt.

Palace brought back Arteta’s players in the second half of the season but failed to capitalize on their chances.

Eberechi Eze was guilty only of Arsenal’s No. 1 shooting Ramsdale dead on.

“The difference between the two teams is scoring goals,” said Palace boss and former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira.

We created two good chances and didn’t take them. Arsenal threatened to counter-attack in the second half but were fortunate to be given breathing space for the final five minutes.

Bukayo Saka’s cross deflected off his English team mate Guhi and the Palace centre-back headed it into his own net.
