In qualifying, the two leading title contenders, Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc, are set to start at the back of the grid among the six drivers who will take penalties for fitting new power unit components.

In Friday’s second practice at the Belgian Grand Prix, Verstappen set the Red Bull’s time ahead of nearest rival Ferrari’s Leclerc.

After being overtaken by Carlos Sainz in the opening morning session, the 24-year-old Dutchman stormed back to dominate the proceedings with a fastest lap of one minute and 45.507 seconds.

This saw Leclerc lap eight-tenths of a second around the majestic Spa-Francorchamps track, where thousands of fans, including many in Verstappen’s ‘Orange Army’ of visitors, camped among the pine trees.

Both Verstappen and Leclerc are taking new power-unit parts, which will take more than their authorized allocation for the season and will have grid penalties.

That means they will start at the back of the field for the Belgian race weekend, along with four other drivers who opted to switch to new engines.

“I have to try and work from the back of the grid,” said Verstappen. But at least we should have dry conditions. I think it’s worse than the weather today.

On an uneventful and somewhat difficult day, Lando Norris was third for McLaren with Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and Sainz in the second Ferrari.

Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, chasing a sixth consecutive podium in Sunday’s race, finished sixth ahead of two-time champion Fernando Alonso in the Mercedes and George Russell in the second Mercedes.

Daniel Ricciardo, who announced he will be leaving McLaren at the end of the year after agreeing to terminate his contract, was ninth and Sergio Perez in the second Red Bull was 10th.
