Ben Rutten, Essendon coach sacked, press conference, video, latest, replacement, James Hird, board meeting

Ben Rutton has been sacked as Essendon coach.

After a week of away chaos and an 11th-hour bid for Alastair Clarkson being turned down, the club’s 66-point defeat at Richmond on Sunday proved to be Rutton’s final game in charge of the club.

The club’s board met on Sunday to decide Root’s fate, as suggested by new Bombers president David Barham on Friday. It was then decided that Rutten’s contract would be terminated, Barham then informed Rutten of the call.

Rutten said in his post-match press conference on Saturday night that he thought he “deserved better” after being officially hurt by the club.

Baram admitted Rutten and his family had an “incredibly difficult time” last week, but said the team’s lack of competition in the 2022 season had “forced” the board to make a decision.

“Ben’s dedication and care to this playing group has been second to none, and we commend him for his dedication to what we know is a rewarding role as head coach,” Barham said.

“The sad reality is at various levels this season; we simply haven’t been competitive. And while we admit we have an emerging roster, we’ve had to make the decision.”

“Our members and supporters should, and should, expect better from a proud football club. We appreciate that this is a difficult phase for our club. But as I said in my President’s speech yesterday, we will be a brave and courageous football club. We need to get back to being a successful football club.

“We will consider the next steps carefully and diligently and will update you on the next senior coaching appointment in due course.”

Barham and CEO Xavier Campbell will address the media in the hangar on Sunday afternoon.

More to come.
