Brisbane Broncos resurgence, Ben Ikin, head of football, signings, contracts, transfers, Tevita Pangai Junior, Adam Reynolds, Kurt Capewell, news

Broncos director of football Ben Eakin has revealed that finals football is the goal for Kevin Walters’ side this season – adding that the club needed to get rid of the “non-buyers” to achieve success.

The Red Hill club finished in fourth place, a far cry from last season’s 15th place finish.

Eakin was appointed midway through the 2021 season and tasked with returning the NRL powerhouse to the top half of the ladder.

Cleaning up the club’s roster was his first call.

“We had a goal to play in the finals,” Eakin said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

We knew we had to improve, so we made a little plan.

“It wasn’t too complicated, it was just pulling all the good guys who were a little interrupted with the noises that went through the area.

“Getting everyone back on track and cleaning up some of the unruly people.

“Once you start winning, everyone is happy and committed, so it turns to work.

“The team started winning and their confidence grew.

As it stands now, Kevin Walters’ team looks set to finish in the top four, and Eakin has made two key recruits that have made a big impact on the team’s success.

Eakin said Kurt Capewell and Adam Reynolds have become “extensions” of the coaching staff.

“Even though we went behind Adam Reynolds and Kurt Capwell, we were a little bit lucky to finish with a group of senior players,” Eakin said.

“They’ve been extensions in the coaching staff.

“Adam Reynolds has got one of the best footy minds I’ve ever seen.

“At the level of the standards, if anyone in that group of players loses the category, Kurt Capewell will look at them as if he is going to kill them.

“Suddenly, this group of very talented young people upped the ante.

“The gap between their best and their worst has closed.”
