Cameron Smith withdraws with injury, rankings, prize money

Australian star Cam Smith has withdrawn from this week’s PGA Tour BMW Championship citing a hip injury, organizers have confirmed.

Smith, the recent British Open champion, has been struggling with hip problems for months in connection with his move to the elite LIV golf circuit, according to agent Bud Martin.

“He’s been struggling with some hip and hip discomfort for several months and thought it would be best if he rested this week chasing the FedEx,” Martin said in a statement cited by US media.

Smith’s injury could not have come at a worse time as the players compete in the second round of the lucrative FedEx Cup playoffs.

The BMW Championship purse is AUD$21.3 million and Smith’s absence will see him miss out on crucial FedEx Cup points leading to the finals at the Tour Championship.

The BMW winner has 2,000 points, four times the regular season points tally.

Smith is currently third in the standings – which determines the starting point for the final – but only has a narrow lead over Sam Burns and Tony Finn, who are both within 300 points.

The winner of the FedEx Cup will take home $25.6 million for a total of $106.8 million.

Smith’s suspension comes after last weekend’s hopes of victory at the St. Jude Championship in Memphis — the opening round of the 2022 FedEx Cup Playoffs — were marred by a foul.

The Aussie world number two was handed a two-stroke penalty for improper ball placement in Sunday’s final round.

That meant Smith started the final 18 holes not just two back, but four shots off the lead. Smith finished six strokes behind eventual winner Will Zalatoris.

The rules violation controversy comes amid reports that Smith has agreed to join the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Series.

Smith declined to comment on the reports when asked by Memphis reporters last week.
