Newcastle wingers Edric Lee and Dominic Young both crossed for two, while the Raiders scored through Seb Criss and Jordan Rapana.

Cavaliers captain Jayden Braley scored at halftime to give his team a 22-8 lead.

But the Green Machine came flying out of the blocks in the second half and Chris made sure of the double before Hudson Young showed some individual brilliance.

Jamal Fogarty equalized with a free kick in the 54th minute.

Canberra prop Josh Papalii made a lazy save in the 72nd minute before Joe Tappen found Jack Wighton to score.

Raiders coach Ricky Stewart made his first appearance since his suspension during his postgame press conference.

72nd minute

Canberra prop Josh Papalii made a lazy save in the 72nd minute before Joe Tappen found Jack Wighton to score.

Andrew Voss said: “Big Papa Thunder on the field, linking up with his front-row partner Tappin for Jack Wighton and Canberra scoring through three of their big names.”

49th minute

Canberra forward Sebastian Chriss rumbled out of the ruck half and ran after himself to score by centimeters.

“Hudson Young does it himself, which is something special from a back-end provider,” Greg Alexander said.

43rd minute

Jamal Fogarty scored Canberra’s first goal in the second half with a 40m bomb.

“The knights have run out of time. Nobody was going to the ball, I was out there looking at pictures of the Knights, nobody wanted to own it,” Andrew Voss said.

“This is a great move from Seb Chris,” Greg Alexander said.

40th minute

The Raiders had just 20 seconds left to defend when Matt Crocker scampered through the gap 40 yards out.

Lock Jayden Braley found him on the inside and the Newcastle boss finished next to the posts.

Greg Alexander: “What a finish, with 40 seconds left when the scrum was packed and Jayden Braley scored Newcastle’s fifth try of the half.”

37th minute

Edric Lee jumped over Jordan Rapana to score the star’s only try and now both Newcastle wings have scored two tries.

Lee Anthony had a lot of work to do after collecting a Milford bomb and needed all of his 196cm frame to reach and score.

“He’s long everywhere and stretches to score, look at his face on Edric, he’s got another one,” Andrew Voss said.

33rd minute

The Raiders set up a well-executed fifth tackle play to create a layup for cornerback Jordan Rapana.

The last pass from Xavier Savage to Rapana looked flat but the attempt was stopped to make it 12-8 with the game.

“They played Newcastle all the way before they stopped this try,” Greg Alexander said.

Newcastle are the better team for 35 minutes. Five line breaks went 17/17, while the Raiders managed just eight sets.

26th minute

Newcastle centre-half Dane Gagai showed some sensational footwork before he palmed Nick Kotrick past Dominic Young to score the second.

Great play from Dane Gagai there, Seb Chris gets a loaner and goes outside, good footwork and enough speed to get down the right touchline,” Greg Alexander said.

“A little stop-and-go and great. It’s easy for Dom Young.

19th minute

The Cavaliers went back in front with a poor defensive read by Nick Kotrick to allow Dominique Young to score untouched from the corner.

Greg Alexander on Fox League: “Canberra were horribly short, Nick Kotrick was on a long way to make a play for Dane Gagai, which left a lot of space for Dominic Young.”

11th minute

Raiders center Sebastian Kris showed plenty of strength to finish from 10 yards out after collecting a nice pass from Jack Witten.

Andrew Voss “Chris acted on Gagai, got up and left the starting center.”

6th minute

Newcastle winger Edric Lee scored his 12th try of the season, a season-high.

The Cavaliers moved the ball from one side of the field to the other, creating a layup that allowed Lee to score untouched.

“Everybody played a role in that experiment,” Andrew Voss said.

“Time to try, he’s the king of McDonald’s Jones Stadium.”
