Israeli striker Liel Abada scored twice as Celtic beat bitter rivals Rangers 4-0 on Saturday to continue his perfect start to his Scottish Premiership campaign.

Abada’s strike and Jota’s beauty put the champions 3-0 up on the stroke of half-time before a terrible mistake by Rangers goalkeeper John McLaughlin gave the home side a fourth goal with 12 minutes to go through David Turnbull.

Celtic’s sixth win in six league games – 25 goals scored and 1 conceded – took them five points clear of Rangers and extended their unbeaten run in the Premiership to 38.

Abada may have taken the scoring credit — he took his tally to five in the last two games — but it was mastermind Matt O’Reilly who set up the two goals.

The game was over at half-time with Celtic leading by three goals. The 20-year-old Abada doubled the lead five minutes after the break, but Yota’s shot in the 32nd minute caught the eye.

He received the ball from O’Reilly and dunked it on McLaughlin. Celtic did not give up in the second half and it was little surprise when they increased their advantage as their opponents were more active in attack.

McLaughlin was completely at fault for passing the ball straight to Turnbull and he happily accepted the gift and slotted it into the net.

Celtic’s dominance was even more impressive when they lost Japanese star Kyogo Furuhashi to a shoulder injury after 5 minutes.

“We’ll see with Kyoghue,” Postecoglou told BBC Sport.

“It’s a shoulder injury, a bit of a knock because he was brilliant. Breathe with Starfelt. It was a little disappointing for him as he was looking forward to Tuesday.

Both teams will have to focus on their opening Champions League group matches – the first time both have played at this stage since 2007.

The win puts Celtic in good stead for a tough match against leaders Real Madrid on Tuesday.

However, Rangers’ Dutch manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has some serious morale-building to do ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Ajax in Amsterdam.
