Collingwood vs Carlton, Craig McRae press conference, Jamie Elliott goal, video, top four finish

Collingwood coach Craig McRae admitted he felt another sensational comeback win in Sunday’s remarkable one-point win over Carlton at the MCG.

The Blues led by as many as 25 points early in the last quarter before the Pies kicked the game’s final five goals, including the eventual game-winner from Jamie Elliott with less than two minutes remaining.

Facing the media after the match, an elated McCrae was at a loss for words as Collingwood cemented a four-over lead.

“I don’t know what to say, I really don’t. “Just looking at this team, I’m speechless.”

“I can’t believe we found another way to win, I really can’t.

“I tried to get a few minutes alone in a quiet place to take it all in, because it’s hard to realize what we’ve just done.”

McRae may have felt that victory was out of reach early in the fourth quarter, when Carlton added 10 goals to their lead, but in the end they did not.

“oh no. I didn’t tell the players but I thought that (a bridge too far),” he said.

“Especially in the last quarter when they peppered (the goals), I thought if they got one of those goals we’d be done.

“This way, the kick and the missed shot gives us hope. This team doesn’t need much hope.

Asked how he talked the team through three quarters following the 43-point turnaround, McRae pointed to the side’s strength throughout the season.

“This team is probably the best I’ve ever seen in terms of managing moments and playing minutes,” he said.

“That was consistent language, I used it before games, at halftime and so on. You have to play minutes to beat us and we showed that today.

In addition, McRae pointed out the similarities he returned to many times during the storm.

I’m really big on using this windscreen wiper analogy for moving things sideways.

“A lot of things were out of our control in the third quarter. I thought the green type rubs probably went their way with non-existent decisions.

“Oh well, that happens, knock it off, hang on, move on. It was a little bit of getting rid of what was there and then let’s keep our eyes on Hi, this is what we’re going to do, let’s get really frustrated with our ball movement and see what happens.
