David Klemmer stood down, Newcastle Knights vs Wests Tigers, Adam O’Brien, press conference, video, when will David Klemmer return

Knights coach Adam O’Brien admitted Sunday’s 14-10 win over the Tigers was a “relief for everyone” after a “tough” week for the club.

The Cavaliers have been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons this week after star prop David Klemmer was suspended in a disciplinary matter.

Klemmer refused to get out when he hit a HR in the Knights’ Round 20 loss to the Bulldogs after spraying a trainer.

Klemmer was also given a suspended sentence while he was out of the squad for the Tigers clash.

The club has withstood criticism left, right and center leading up to Sunday for dealing with the issue that often arises in the game.

To make matters worse, earlier in the week, a report surfaced that a player had made racist comments to a staff member.

But the Cavaliers put the horror week behind them and shot to a three-try lead on Sunday to survive a comeback from the Tigers to complete the win.

Fox League analyst Michael Ennis said the team looked “galvanized”, while Knights captain Jayden Briley said after the game that the players used the violence as “a bit of motivation”.

“It was hard to read all the headlines and there were a lot of things that came out that we didn’t like and maybe a lot of them weren’t true,” he said.

But in difficult times, I think you have to stick together to get yourself out of weeks like this.

I think we probably did a good job this week to shut out the outside noise and use it as a little motivation to show who we are… It was a good performance tonight.

O’Brien went through all the emotions in the coaches’ box during the game. The Cavaliers took a 14-goal lead into halftime.

Asked if the win – which snapped a four-game losing streak – was a relief, O’Brien said: “It’s a relief for everybody – the players, the staff, the families.

“It was ugly but we don’t care, we got it done,” he added.

“It’s important. Everyone is invested, not just me, from the physios to the players.

“It’s been a tough week, I’m proud of the players, they’ve come together, we’ve really trained well together. I am very pleased with them.

“These kids, they really nailed it.

“The leaders addressed some issues — there were some things that needed to be addressed.

“There’s no doubt there’s been a lot of feedback on our club and how we run things. Some things are learned for us and some things are completely wrong, but when you lose you open yourself up so I get it.

“We take our medicine, look at the parts we can control, and to do something… we forget about the rest.”

O’Brien also provided insight into his involvement in the event.

“I’ve made a statement now that it’s getting to that point, it’s got to escalate,” he said.

“I’ve made a statement about it but I’ve been around a lot to know that it’s hard to get some guys off the field at times. I was in that position, but now the matter is taken care of.

Klemmer has confirmed he will return straight to the 17 for next week’s clash with the Broncos.

“Yeah, it’s fixed,” O’Brien said when asked if Clemmer would return.

“It was a process he went through and sometimes when you go through a process you realize you could have done it differently and change it – so we’re trying to get past that part.

“Big Clem has accepted some responsibility for some things, he’s spoken to the team and no doubt he’s dealt with it now, he’s back in the squad. I’m going to pick him on Tuesday and he’s back in training now.”
