Donovan Mitchell traded to Cleveland Cavaliers, full package, New York Knicks offer, Stephen A. Smith reaction, RJ Barrett extension, Leon Rose, Utah Jazz

Kicks president Leon Rose announced RJ Barrett’s contract extension on Friday, calling him “a cornerstone of our team.”

He better be hardcore because the Knicks reportedly won’t get Donovan Mitchell. This report heads to the Cavaliers for five first-round picks, Colin Sexton, Lauri Markkanen and Ochai Agbaji.

Three of the first round were unexpected – it was stuck in the negotiations with the Knicks. Utah’s executive director of basketball operations, Danny Ainge, originally wanted four unexpected first-round picks, but settled for three.

“Ainge and Utah thought they had it over the barrel,” one league source said. “They held back the picks and player offers and Danny got the three unexpected.”

Mitchell, who removed Utah from his Twitter bio this week, would prefer a trade from the Knicks to return home, but is still closer to his Westchester County roots in Ohio than Utah.

One of Rose’s final deals was two unexpected first-rounders and three conditional picks with Barrett. It’s unknown if Rose would have offered a non-Barrett iteration with three unexpected first-round picks. Ainge passed on but was still interested in getting Quentin Grimes in the deal. Apparently, Rose didn’t think Ainge had three unexpected first-rounders and barred Grimes from any offers.

Simply put, the Knicks thought they were in a strong position and took a “gamble”, as it were ESPN Adrian Wojnarowski describes ‘The Woj Pod’.

“I think they expected New York to back off,” Wojnarowski said.

“They didn’t get another chance against Utah. Utah didn’t come back to them Thursday and say, ‘Hey, we got this offer from Cleveland. Do you want to raise it?’ On their minds, that was when New York walked into Monday.

“The deal they made with Cleveland now, they agreed. And New York found out Mitchell was going to Cleveland after a deal was already agreed upon, and Utah didn’t go around with New York to give them a chance to control the deal.

It’s also worth noting that all things being equal, Ainge would likely be barring Mitchell from being traded off-Broadway and playing in the media capital of the world.

The Knicks’ Plan B is building their young interior and still being comfortable with making a big trade with their draft capital. They will have two first-round picks in 2023 and 11 over the next seven years.

The Knicks lost their 2022 lottery pick at No. 11 to make room for Jalen Brunson this year and could potentially lose another first rounder.

The Knicks will be on the lookout for the next upset player with the previously mentioned Oklahoma City point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander going on a trade freeze. Ironically, the Knicks passed up in the 2108 draft, just as they pounced on Mitchell in 2017. Gilgeous-Alexander may agree with Brunson more than Mitchell.

Shortly before the Mitchell news broke, the Knicks released a statement on Barrett, who is said to have inked a four-year extension worth up to $120 million (A177m) to soften the blow.

“We are thrilled to announce a well-deserved extension to RJ Barrett, a cornerstone of our team,” said Rose.

“At only 22 years old, he has raised his game every season and is solidifying himself as a force on both ends of the court. We believe he will continue to improve with his passion for the game and dedication to his profession. We want to continue to build our team and culture around players like RJ who possess these values and traits.”

But not everyone is buying the positive spin, certainly Knicks megafan and sports personality Stephen A.

“Something always goes wrong,” Smith said Friday.

“I wanted Donovan Mitchell in New York. I kept my mouth shut. I didn’t say a word because I didn’t want to blow it. I didn’t want to get in the way. … So we go into another season again and the New York Knicks don’t have a star. They are elsewhere than New York Knicks uniforms.

“They make me sick… Nothing gets done with the Knicks in New York. nothing. nothing. … It just doesn’t end with the Knicks. It never ends. “

Meanwhile, a coaching source said. Post There is doubt as to how good Barrett can be.

“The Knicks routinely overpay decent players,” they began.

“Can RJ be more than a low efficiency, high utilization point? Maybe. But maybe not. This is the main thing. But they think he has a lot of room for improvement.

The Knicks starting five is now set to be Brunson, Evan Fournier, Barrett, Julius Randle and Mitchell Robinson.

The Knicks felt they could become a 47-win team with Mitchell on board and make a 10-win improvement. But they didn’t want to deplete their draft capital and prevent them from taking one more crucial step.

Now their roster makes them a playoff contender, but not much more than that. Meanwhile, the Eastern Conference rival Cavaliers have done well to quietly acquire the goods from GM Coby Altman, a native of New York.
