Dustin Martin future, last game for Richmond Tigers against Brisbane Lions, trade, rumours, whispers, contract, cotenders, suitors, Sydney Swans, GWS Giants, Gold Coast Suns

With Dustin Martin’s future in Richmond uncertain beyond this season, this Thursday night could be the last time we see him in yellow and black.

Martin is set to return for the Tigers’ final against Brisbane after suffering his first serious hamstring injury since round 16. He only played 8 games this year due to personal reasons and a hamstring injury.

It comes in a year filled with speculation that Martin may seek a trade away from Punt Road, despite being under contract in Richmond until 2024 at a lucrative $2.6 million cap hit. Although the medalist has steadily reduced his interest.

Speaking on channel 9 leg assigned, Journalist Damian Barrett says he expects talks between Martin and club bosses about his future to improve as Richmond’s season ends.

“If they lose this game[against Brisbane]there’s a chance they’re going to lose all the conversations we’re having at the end of the year,” Barrett said.

“Peggy O’Neill, Brendan Gale and Damien Hardwick publicly suggested – above all the media at the time – that this conversation had to stop.

“I still expect that to be discussed, and it’s likely to be the last game he plays for the Tigers when he’s under contract for two years.”

Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd believes the 31-year-old is a “big risk” to rival clubs and questioned who the real suitors were for him.

And despite much speculation over Martin’s future, veteran reporter Caroline Wilson predicted he would stay with the Tigers given the difficulty in moving his big-money contract.

“Sydney adamantly deny they’re into it, I don’t think GWS will have the room. Gold Coast were the other club to be linked with Dustin Martin – who also vehemently deny they are looking at him.

“It’s a lot of money for a player of his age. Now if I get money, I guess I’ll stay in Richmond.”

Two-time All-Australian Ken Korns labeled Martin “the best finalist I’ve ever seen”, but said expectations should be moderated around his performance this weekend after a long layoff.

Lloyd added: “I see him as a pure forward – if he can score a couple of goals, apply pressure, that’s all you can hope for from someone who has lost a lot of legs.
