Western Bulldogs striker Josh Bruce has returned to AFL with a hamstring injury, and the 30-year-old has struggled this week in training.

The dogs complained of Hammerry on Thursday, prompting Bruce to withdraw from the first team and play his first AFL game since August last year.

Fitness coach Chris Bell told the club’s official website:

“We have been recovering for a long time and we do not want to take any risks and he will not play this weekend.

“We’ll be reviewing Josh next week.”

Elsewhere, Gold Coast will be without striker Joel Jeffrey for the rest of the season.

Jeffrey suffered the injury in Sunday’s win over Adelaide, but coach Stuart Dave and the club initially thought it was a minor injury.

“It’s very sad, Joel,” he said on Thursday.

“It ‘s a big surprise (after the game)… But on Monday he was a little shocked because he did a lot of work to get it. Where he is.

“You just want your kids to play.”

Brisbane has been forced to make three major changes to Thursday night’s table tennis tournament in Melbourne.

The Lions are expected to be out of the game, but young star Zach Bailey will not miss out on health and safety protocols.

Jimmy Tunstil will make his AFL debut after being named to Chris Fagan’s team. He was elected to National Draft 41 in 2021 and this time it will be the second part of the first draft for Brisbane after Kai Lohman.

Jack Payne and Thomas Berry will be sidelined for their fourth and second games of the season (excluding Berry subtitles).

Melbourne have regained their star defender Steven May following an off-field clash with team-mate Jack Melksham.

At the expense of Mick Brown, who left Sam Whitedeman, Toby Bedford returned. Daniel Turner (face) and Max Gown (ankle) will not miss out along with Kade Chandler, who will be leaving the team after being a minor at the Queen’s birthday.

The rest of the 15th round matches will be announced on Thursday at 6 pm AEST.
