Steve Houghton has not been named in the England squad for Euro 2022.
Lions manager Sarina Wigman named the 23-man squad on Wednesday, which includes recently recovered Manchester City striker Chloe Kelly and Chelsea’s Fran Kirby.
Although there was no place for former captain Houghton, he has not played since Achilles’ injury since January.
The Manchester City defender has played in five major tournaments for England and has made 121 appearances for the club so far.
“It was a difficult decision,” Wigman confirmed at a press conference at St. George’s Park. [to leave Houghton out]But she is not ready to compete.
“We planned with her and she did everything she could, we supported her as much as possible.
“She’s in a good position but I don’t think she’s ready to compete. It is a matter of time, and we do not have that time.
“It was very difficult. It’s hard for us to feel sorry for every player, but she did everything for a big player who had a big impact on the English game – but other players do everything.
“Of course she was very sad and I know she did everything to make it so she was not happy but she took my argument and left it for now.”
Wigman named a temporary 28-man squad in May, with Sandy McKivever, Niam Charles, Katie Zelm and Lucy Stanford all missing on the final day.
As the host nation, England will take on Austria on July 6 at Old Trafford.
