James defends ´great´ England right-back rival Alexander-Arnold

“People who ask for Trent Alexander-Arnold’s talent” don’t know the game very well, “said Reese James.

The highly-rated Chelsea right-back is in direct competition with his Liverpool counterpart to join England’s Gareth Southgate ahead of this year’s World Cup.

Southgate have a wealth of resources to choose from on the right, with Kyle Walker and Kiran Tripper also part of the squad.

James, who started for the Three Lions in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Italy at the Molnox, said he wanted to be the country’s first choice but disagreed with critics of Alexander Arnold’s defensive behavior.

The Liverpool midfielder has been widely criticized for his defensive prowess, with some blaming him for his side’s Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid last month.

However, the 23-year-old has scored 17 goals in 32 Premier League appearances last season, more than any other English right-back in 90 minutes.

“I try my best. [to be first choice]”Says James. “Only my shows can prove what I can bring. I hope to show that I am ready to play every game in these games and into the construction of the next season.

“I also made a mistake. I punished Hungary, so both of us are still learning our profession.

“Liverpool have 95 per cent of the ball and he defends less than I do. People have a lot to say and they don’t really know the game. Trent is a very good player.
