Kalyn Ponga, new details of cubicle toilet ejection, Jimmy Brings, Kurt Mann, Newcastle Knights, Round 23

The Knights, along with Kalin Ponga, the club’s star fullback, and Kurt Mann were only at Newcastle’s Delaney Hotel for a total of 25 minutes on Saturday night.

Knights officials were told Ponga and Mann arrived at the pub at 10.45pm on Saturday night and left the premises at 11.10pm.

Hotel staff told the Knights that none of the players were drunk – which contradicts Ponga’s father Andre’s version of the story, which claims his son was a rogue in the toilet room.

It’s a far cry from the crime of the century at fair value, but the Cavaliers are going down a dangerous path in how they handle any sanctions they give the $1 million fullback.

It’s a bit rich to transfer Bradman Best and Enari Tuala to the NSS Cup after being six minutes late for the team bus on Sunday morning and allowing Ponga a free pass after refusing to follow the coach’s orders.

Is Ponga a protected species in Newcastle? Because that’s what it looks like.

Knights utility Mann is expected to be fined for drinking while sidelined with a soft tissue injury, but early speculation that his exit from Newcastle could mean Ponga will escape any punishment.

If that is the case, the Knights will leave themselves open to criticism that Ponga is a koala bear, but the rest of Newcastle’s roster is held to a different standard.

The riders did not have any medical professional instructing Ponga not to drink alcohol.

From an outside perspective, it all just gives Ponga its run.

We’re also close to finding out exactly how tough Ponga’s five-year, $6 million Newcastle contract is.

If the Knights’ co-captain is fairly clueless about leading the club through its current steamy mess, Ponga will sacrifice a trip to the World Cup with the Kangaroos in November.

Instead of traveling to the UK and returning to pre-season at the end of January, he will set up his qualification in Newcastle from November 1.
