NORTH Melbourne will look to continue riding a wave of good news on Saturday and end a formidable 2022 campaign in style when they take on the Gold Coast Suns at Marvel Stadium.

The Kangaroos (2-19, 56.5%), who appointed Alastair Clarkson as coach for 2023, would leapfrog West Coast on the ladder with a win. And with the Eagles playing top-placed Geelong in Geelong later that day, that will see North miss out on the wooden spoon.

The Suns (9-12, 99.1%) can even their season record with a win and jump to 10-12 — where they finished with that ratio in 2014. But they have a poor record at Docklands, winning just seven of 29. Games there.

Quarter-by-quarter match report

It was the Suns who got off to a fast start, with Noah Anderson and Malcolm Rosas scoring twice in the first two minutes, despite the positive vibes surrounding North’s pre-match.

Then the Russians got their ball rolling, first Josh Fetter setting up Bailey Scott’s goal with a terrific cross.

“The ball movement was sharp from both ends,” said Fox Footy’s Leigh Montagna.

But both teams struggled to find targets inside the 50, leading to deep interceptions on defense.

Just before the quarter-hour mark, Alex Davies pulled off his unpickable boot and Alex Sexton added another to extend the Suns’ quarter-time lead to 15 points.
