Eder Militao’s performances last season show why he is the best defender in the history of Real Madrid.
The Brazilian signed from Porto for 2019 50million in July 2019, a year after joining the Portuguese club from Sao Paulo.
He struggled to make an impact in his first two campaigns at the Santiago Bernabeu, but made 23 appearances in La Liga.
However, the departures of Sergio Ramos and Rafael Varane ahead of the 2021-22 season provide a perfect opportunity for the 24-year-old to strengthen his position at the heart of Los Blancos’ back line.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side have won 50 matches in all competitions in La Liga and the Champions League.
Militao surpassed the club’s other defenders in most respects by averaging 18 goals (52) and 204 assists – 63 more than any other defender.
He has a lot of blocks (20) and approvals (105), participated in 291 duels – 133 more than any other Madrid defender.
Militao said he did not feel pressured to fill Varan and Ramos’ shoes and believed he had more to show why he bought Madrid.
“When they both left, they showed that they had made history with the club,” he told Marca.
“I thought it was time to do something, to show the fans and everyone that they could trust me. I have shown what I can do and why I am in Real Madrid.
When Militao was asked if the price tag was correct, he said, “Yes. When I arrived, things were not going well because two center-backs were ahead of me. They have been together for a long time, but I showed them why I signed.
“I did not stop doing the things I had done before, and I lost confidence. I know I’m not good, but work and family have helped me every day. ”
Militao spoke of Ancelotti, who won his first Champions League title by beating Liverpool last month.
“He’s a great coach,” the defender added. He helps us a lot and respects the decisions of the players.
“He talks a lot in training day in and day out. He’s a very funny guy, he connects with us.
