In a dramatic start to the Premier League season on Saturday, Liverpool had to come from behind twice to salvage a 2-2 draw against newly promoted Fulham.

Aleksandar Mitrovic twice put the impressive hosts ahead, but Darwin Nunez came off the bench to make a big impact on his Premier League debut.

The Uruguayan, who arrived at Anfield in a €100 million ($A147 million) deal from Benfica, slotted home Mohamed Salah’s equalizer with 10 minutes remaining in the 1-1 draw.

Liverpool’s season began with a better result than Manchester City, winning the Community Shield in the previous competition between the two title contenders.

But the Reds were penalized for a sluggish first half with two points that could have ensured a costly relegation.

Mitrovic scored 43 goals as Fulham won the Championship last season and stabbed Liverpool in the first minute.

Jurgen Klopp’s frustration at the line-out did not wake up the visitors until Mitrovic outmuscled Trent Alexander-Arnold and headed in Kenny Tate’s cross in the 32nd minute.

Liverpool flickered into life before the break when Luis Diaz hit the post from a tight angle.

However, it wasn’t until the towering presence of Nunez that the Champions League finalists began to pose a constant threat.

When Nunez was at fault, Fulham were inches away from doubling their lead when he controlled the ball and fed the ball to Neskens Kebano, who fired the ball off the inside of the post.

On the other hand, the new Liverpool striker quickly made his presence felt when Marek Rodak’s daring cross from Salah was saved.

Ninez scored his first Premier League goal moments later with 26 minutes remaining when he headed home Salah’s low cross.

There was only one winner in sight at that point, however, as Mitrovic surprisingly turned on Virgil van Dijk and cut the Serbian forward from inside the box.

Fulham were unable to score in the final 18 minutes for a famous victory, despite Mitrovic’s free-kick slotting past Alisson Becker.

Another long ball to Nunez caused panic in the Fulham defenders and the ball eventually fell kindly for Salah to score in the opening week of the Premier League season for the sixth time in a row.

Liverpool Liverpool could have grabbed the win with five minutes left in the game.

But Fulham fell short as they made a strong start to their bid to avoid relegation for a fourth successive season in the top flight.
