Sonny Bill Williams to fight UFC Mark Hunt, another Paul Gallen foe

Sonny Bill Williams seems to have two conditions for his boxing opponents – they must be in their 40s and former enemies of Paul Gallen.

Retired NRL star 48-year-old former UFC heavyweight Mark Hunt is said to be making his next fight in 2020 against Gallen, who was beaten on points over six rounds.

The Daily Telegraph’s Buzz Rothfield broke the news on Saturday night, reporting that Williams had been forced into the fight after a long-awaited battle against Gallen “fell through.”

Williams (9-0) has had two fights since retiring from football, winning a decision over Waikato Falefehi a year ago before finishing Barry Hall by submission in under two minutes in March this year.

Hall, 45, died in 2011. He was fighting professionally for the second time in 2019 due to his split with Gallen.

Boxing fans – and Williams – will be hoping Hunt can produce some of the fireworks he managed in an entertaining bout with Gallen.

After an impressive kickboxing career, the heavy hitter, who fought for the UFC title, landed some big shots before being knocked out by the former Sharks boss.

Williams’ swift completion of the Hall was seen as a feat as the age gap appeared too wide for the former AFL star to bridge.

Williams, 36, is 12 years younger than Hunt.
