St George Illawarra Dragons, Anthony Griffin, facing the sack, contract, deal, favouritism, Ben Hunt, Andrew McCullough, Josh McGuire, future

The Dragons are facing fresh allegations that they are a divided club under coach Anthony Griffin.

Fox Sports have been told St George Illawarra players are upset over Griffin’s friendship with Queensland captain Ben Hunt, forward Andrew McCullough and forward Josh McGuire.

In Red V, former Queensland forward McGuire has gone so far as to be nicknamed “the picker” because of his close relationship with Griffin.

At Dragons, there is speculation that McGuire will be ahead of the Dragons playing squad in the squad selections.

Griffin is the latest NRL coach to find himself in the firing line ahead of the Dragons’ board meeting on Tuesday.

Considering the way the Dragons have matched the Sydney Roosters and Brisbane Broncos over the past two weeks – scoring 86 points – the club’s current woes will be top of the agenda.

Since taking over at St George Illawarra in late 2020, Griffin has won 16 games and lost 25 as the Dragons’ head coach.

The Dragons’ board are unlikely to make any decision on Griffin’s future on Tuesday, but the clock has quickly set in for the remaining seven games of the season.

There are figures within the Dragons board pushing for the return of club favorite son Dean Young, who is currently assistant coach at the North Queensland Cowboys under Todd Petten.

The Dragons face a tough task in the final seven rounds of the season against Manny, Cowboys, Sharks, Raiders, Titans, Wests Tigers and Broncos.

It will be a tough road ahead with three of those sides currently fighting for a top four finish and two fighting to make the top eight.

Griffin is safe for now but the drums are well and truly beating inside the Red V.
