He shot par on four holes, but a bogey on the second was struggling.
However, Smith saved his form in the sixth over when he hit an eagle.
It was just what the Aussie star needed to get back on track, though he shot par over the next three holes.
A bogey on the eleventh was followed by consecutive birdies as Smith’s first round continued.
Meanwhile, fellow ace Adam Scott finished his first round at two-under, sitting several strokes off the top.
Scott shot a birdie on the third hole but bogeyed the fifth, although he immediately bounced back with a birdie on the sixth.
He continued his good form with a birdie at the tenth and a three-under at the twelfth hole, but a bogey at the 15th meant he would not sit very high on the leaderboard.
A $500k hit that could thwart Norman’s OCC plans and trigger the second coming of Scott.
