Hampshire held on to win a record-equalling third English county cricket Twenty20 Blast title, defeating Lancashire by just one run in a thrilling final at Edgbaston on Saturday.

Lancashire needed four off the last ball to reach a target of 153, with Australia bowling out limited-overs paceman Nathan Ellis to Richard Gleeson.

But with fireworks in the Birmingham sky as Hampshire celebrated, replays showed there was no ball.

That Lancashire needed just two to win but after the smoke cleared Gleeson could only manage a single as Lancashire finished on 151-8.

“It was a spirit of passion. All I could think was, ‘Gee, I look stupid here. I gave everything on the holiday. My heart absolutely sank.

“I argued with myself. I tried a couple of off-pace yorkers at the end and I knew they were waiting for the slower ball and I didn’t know when to pin it. So when we were talking about finishing the game of the two, I thought what a good chance to make the player miss and he slowly put the ball in.
