World Cup 2022 qualifiers, Socceroos, Graham Arnold spared, axe, next game, fixtures, playoffs, news, latest

Soccerros coach Graham Arnold has survived the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Following a series of defeats in Japan and Saudi Arabia last week, Australia’s Arnold announced today that he will remain in the squad for the June qualifiers.

On June 7, Australia will face the United Arab Emirates in a one-legged clash in Qatar, with the winner facing Peru a week later, and Qatar, in the semi-finals.

The Socceroos have endured nightmares in recent matches, winning just one of their last seven attempts and failing to convert Japan to a six-point lead in the group stage.

This has led to many reports that Arnold is about to lose his seat ahead of today’s stunning announcement.

Football Australia, with the support of Arnold, has referred to the ‘very short change’ ahead of the next stage, which could be a key factor in keeping the Australian manager – any new coach is limited to a few training sessions before the upcoming games.

To the next level of competence ”

Chief executive James Johnson added: “Graham has the support of Australian Football and in this role four years later he will still have the opportunity to complete his appointment in 2018 and see his commitment to the national team.

“We now turn our eyes to the difficult stage in June, our last chance to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
